Bacterial Alginate Biosynthesis and Metabolism

نویسندگان

چکیده

Alginate is a linear anionic heteropolysaccharide with chemical structure consisting of 1,4-linked subunits β-D-mannuronic acid (M) and its C-5 epimer α-L-guluronic (G). It well known that the monomer composition molecular weight alginates affect their properties influence use in food pharmaceutical industries. usually extracted from seaweed for commercial purposes, but can also be produced by bacteria as exopolysaccharide (EPS). Pseudomonas spp. Azotobacter vinelandii are well-known alginate-producing microorganisms. Their biochemical machinery alginate biosynthesis influenced changing culture conditions manipulating genes/proteins, making it relatively easy to obtain customized EPS different weights, M/G compositions, thus physicochemical properties. Although these two genera have very similar biosynthetic pathways mechanisms production, most genes involved being virtually identical, regulation has been shown somewhat different. In this chapter, we present main steps bacteria, including precursor synthesis, polymerization, periplasmic modifications, transport/secretion, post-secretion modification.

Bacterial alginate biosynthesis--recent progress and future prospects.

The polysaccharide alginate was first isolated from marine macroalgae last century, but it was approximately 80 years later that a bacterial source (P. aeruginosa) of the polysaccharide was identified (Linker & Jones, 1966). The association of mucoid forms, i.e. alginate-producing strains, ofP. aeruginosawith chronic lung infections in patients with cystic fibrosis is now well-established, and ...

Auxin Biosynthesis and Metabolism

Charles Darwin cited the 1871 I'h.D. thesis of Theophil Ciesielski when he postulated in 1880 that a "transmitted influence" present in the tip of plant shoots was responsible for gravitropism. Both Darwin and Ciesielski had realized that the influence was affecting growth differentially. This influence was given the name auxin more than 50 years later and subsequently any compound that promote...

Streptomycin Biosynthesis and Metabolism

Extracts of streptomycin-producing strains of Sfreptomyces phosphorylate dihydrostreptomycin (sfrepfidino)phosphate with adenosine 5’-triphosphate as the phosphoryl donor. The second phosphate is esterified with the dihydrostreptobiosamine moiety. Streptomycin (sfreptidino)phosphate was not phosphorylated under similar conditions. Because of its lability, the new enzyme that is responsible for ...

Part 2. Biosynthesis and Metabolism

All eukaryotic organisms and even a few prokaryotes have the ability to synthesise triacylglycerols, and the process has been studied intensively in plants and animals especially. Many cell types and organs have the ability to synthesise triacylglycerols, but in animals the liver, intestines and adipose tissue are most active with most of the body stores in the last. Within all cells, even thos...

Alkaloid biosynthesis: metabolism and trafficking.

Alkaloids represent a highly diverse group of compounds that are related only by the occurrence of a nitrogen atom in a heterocyclic ring. Plants are estimated to produce approximately 12,000 different alkaloids, which can be organized into groups according to their carbon skeletal structures. Alkaloid biosynthesis in plants involves many catalytic steps, catalyzed by enzymes that belong to a w...
